Nabegataki Falls

Nabegataki Falls, located in Oguni Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a breathtaking spot famous for being a "Urami-no-taki"—a waterfall you can actually walk behind. ✨

Behind the two-tiered falls lies a hidden cave. 🫣

This cavern was formed over ages as the river’s current eroded the softer layers of rock beneath the waterfall. Interestingly, the bedrock itself was created by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 90,000 years ago. ✍️

After being featured in a popular tea commercial in the 2000s, its fame soared, and today it attracts visitors from all over the world. 🍵

Oguni Town, home to these falls, is also a hidden gem for tea lovers. 💗 The tea grown here, nurtured by the pure waters and the intense temperature shifts of the Aso region, is packed with deep umami and a rich aroma.

Because the area is prone to morning mist, the fog naturally shades the tea leaves from direct sunlight, resulting in a soft leaf and a distinctively sweet flavor. Although the production volume is still small, this is definitely a spot to watch for the future! ☺️
