The History of Japanese Flowers & Tea
Deeply rooted in Buddhism, the story of tea and flowers in Japan is one of mindfulness, simplicity, and beauty. 🍵🌸
Tea first arrived as a sacred drink for Buddhist monks — used to stay awake during long hours of meditation. 🌿
Flowers were offered to Buddha as a pure expression of devotion.
When the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Sadō) was born, a flower arrangement became an essential part of every tea room.
Not in flashy bouquets, but arranged “as if still growing in the wild” — a quiet, natural beauty that perfectly captures the Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi. ✨
Over time, this elegant custom spread from temples to noble courts, samurai residences, and eventually into the homes of ordinary people through the tokonoma (alcove).
From monks → aristocrats → warriors → everyday families…
both tea and flowers have gently become part of Japanese daily life and soul.
Today, that same spirit lives on in every bowl of matcha. 🍵
