The legendary Japanese warlord
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the legendary Japanese warlord and unifier of Japan, was one of history’s greatest tea lovers.
This is his final resting place 🌸
For Hideyoshi, matcha and the tea ceremony were far more than just a hobby or luxury.
They were his most powerful diplomatic weapon — a tool for politics, displaying authority, and controlling human relationships.
He proudly collected priceless, high-end tea utensils to showcase his power, and regularly hosted grand tea gatherings, inviting allies, rivals, and influential figures. In the East, these ceremonies were the equivalent of a royal ballroom dance.
The refined prestige of Japanese tea culture that we know today exists largely because of him. Without Hideyoshi, modern matcha culture would not be what it is.
I visited his grave to pay my respects and express my gratitude for the rich tea heritage he helped create.
