The Surprising History of Tea Fertilizer

You might be surprised to learn that truly organic tea farming is still relatively rare today.

 Of course, in the old days, there were no chemical fertilizers at all.


Instead, farmers sometimes used well-aged human waste (night soil) as natural fertilizer 😱


Uji, being close to the populous town of Fushimi, had easy access to this resource. It was, in a way, the ultimate closed-loop ecosystem! ✍️


This traditional method has long since disappeared, but it makes you wonder…
Did tea grown with this ancient fertilizer actually taste different?


I’m not sure I’d want to try it… but I’m strangely curious 👀
